Day 15. So, this week i’m going to publish a series of five ideas on the same theme. Looking out how remote working might impact on different facets of long term land use change.

OLD IDEA 1: Remote Working

OLD IDEA 2: Transport

NEW IDEA: People will no longer need to regularly commute for office jobs by car and train. Average journey lengths will go up. Local journeys can be more easily undertaken with active travel.

Five Whys:

  1. With no need to live close to, and regularly attend a ‘HQ’, commuting will dwindle.
  2. Office workers will no longer need to travel by train, car and bus on a regular basis.
  3. With fewer cars on the roads, more space can be allocated to active forms of transport. Reclaiming town centres as human environments.
  4. However, average car journeys will increase, as a more spread out populace will travel further but less frequently.
  5. Without a regular commute, people will be willing to forego car ownership at all, and be willing to just hire cars for the less frequent longer journeys.

Question: No need to commute when you work remote, right? Would you still need to own a car?
