THE IDEAS PROJECT — DAY 26
Day 26. I seem to be getting on to a strong self improvement kick at the moment. Not sure if it’s totally healthy, but certainly presents some interesting ideas.
I was listening to an audio version of ‘How to consciously design your ideal future’ on my run this morning. And there was reference to how Tim Ferris lives his life by 6 month experiments. Which got me joining the dots between a few other ideas. Firstly the mapping of complicated and complex problems to waterfall and agile delivery methodologies (Day 6), and also agile as a 3+1 work recovery cycle (Day 19).
OLD IDEA 1: Agile
OLD IDEA 2: Life
NEW IDEA: Agile your life! If agile is the best delivery methodology for complex problems, and there is no more complex problem than living a good life, then perhaps agile is best way to approach life. Agile your life!
Five Whys:
- Living a good life is a complex problem, not a complicated problem. There is no defined set of rules or even outcomes that work for everyone.
- In this regard, it is pointless, and often very difficult to answer the, what do you want to do in 5 years question? Of course we don’t know. Life is complex.
- So likewise trying to build a waterfall plan, on how to deliver the perfect life is also a waste of time. It’s the wrong approach to the wrong problem.
- Much better to treat life as a series of experiments. Test and learn. Iterate.
- Perhaps the best way to live life is in tune with the 3+1 cycle. Set 3 week objectives, habits or outcomes, and then allow 1 week to recover and reflect, and then repeat.
Question: What do think to this idea? Have you applied agile working methodologies at work? Do you think they could be applied to life more generally?
