THE IDEAS PROJECT — DAY 7
Day 7. With Day 6, I was conceptual or intellectual. Today, i’m being observational, reflecting on a lovely visit to a friends house yesterday.
I outlined the rules of the Ideas Project on Day 0.
OLD IDEA 1: Uncertainty
OLD IDEA 2: Growing Vegetables
NEW IDEA: In uncertain times, people have less trust in the outside world, and unconsciously crave comfort. Growing vegetables is a salve for the soul.
- We are living in uncertain times. Increasing in-equality, shifting geopolitics, digital transformation, Brexit, Covid-19, furloughs, unemployment… There is no shortage of disruption.
- And, all these factors are external, and beyond our control. We feel like fleas riding a bull. We can jump up and down, but we’re not going to influence the direction of travel.
- So we seek control.
- We look closer to home, we look to our gardens. And we think, Vegetables!
- The dutiful care, the regular watering and tending, and the slow, steady, peaceful growth of vegetables is a salve to our soul. Steadying our anxieties, calming our nerves.
Question: Have you taken up growing vegetables during lockdown? It seems to have been a trend amongst many of my friends. Along with baking bread, which I think offers similar comfort.
